Penotte Island

This pretty pedestrian district bears the name of an island, although it is nestled in the city center, behind the Remblai, at the bend of narrow and crooked alleys.

In the middle of the hollyhocks, the houses are decorated with mosaics made up of multicolored shells.

All these decorations are the work of a resident and local artist Danièle Arnaud-Aubin nicknamed the “Lady of the shells”.

She is inspired by mythology, fairy tales, fantastic tales in order to realize them she uses different types of shells: whelks and periwinkles, oysters, clams, scallops, mussels and exotic shells.
